Time To Get Down To Business!!!!!!

All three Football teams wrapped up their preseason practices and scrimmages last week, and are getting ready for their first real games of the year.

The Knights capped off the preseason with a scrimmage against Killeen Ellison last week at Nelson Field. The Knights worked hard against Killeen and located some areas that needed to be addressed before the regular season kicks off. (Continue reading Time to Get Down...)

Walgreens Update

I spoke with Julia Akin, President of The Frisco Shop, on Friday about Walgreen's intentions to purchase the corner property at Burnet and Koenig. She confirmed that negotiations are underway and is encouraged. Frisco's recently met with the broker and everything appears to moving along as planned. For Frisco, it's good news.

The Excitement is Building!

The McCallum Knights football teams held a scrimmage with Pflugerville Hendrickson last Saturday morning. All three teams, Freshmen, JV, and Varsity seemed to have had a good showing against Hendrickson. One Square Acre … Family Graveyard … Reserved Forever

What follows is writeup on the  historical Davis Family Cemetery in Allandale on Vine Street put together by Jack Kern and Doug Davis for the Allandale Reporter. The photo on the left is a picture of the two men standing inside the cemetery. Doug, on the left is a  descendent of the family patriarch and original owner of the land. Jack, standing on the right,  lives on Twin Oaks Drive.  His back yard looks into the cemetery. He is the one that provided the Allandale listserve with the initial background on the cemetery and helped put this piece together.

Davis Family Vine Street Cemetery

History
The George W Davis Family Cemetery was part of a 3,154 acre land grant signed by Mirabeau B Lamar, President of The Republic of Texas, in 1841 to the family patriarch after his service in the battle of San Jacinto. The earliest dated grave is March 25, 1851, but the burial ground may have been in use as early as 1845. In 1918, Doug Davis’s great grandmother became the last person to be buried in the cemetery.

Frisco or Walgreens

Based on recent articles in the Austin Business Journal  (Proposed Walgreens Threatens 53-year old Frisco Restaurant)  and the Austin Chronicle (Food-o-File), long time Frisco restaurant (see history) and Kids Acting Studio may be replaced with a Walgreens. This has generated angst from a number of folks in the Allandale and Brentwood neighborhoods, as well as from patrons of those establishments who don't want to see another piece of the longstanding beloved and familiar replaced with the too familiar. As one Allandale resident put it, "I'm outraged about Walgreen's replacing the Nighthawk- they have the best breakfasts anywhere."

Shoal Creek Greenbelt Needs Our Help!

The Shoal Creek Greenbelt in the Allandale neighborhood needs our help. Please come to the September 27th meeting of the neighborhood association and let us know if you think this is a priority the association should spend money on. Also come if you would like to help with volunteer work necessary to get things done there. It's our greenbelt and we are the only ones who can do something with it. How about it? Will you?

Finally Football Is Here!!!!!!

Can’t you feel the excitement? Football is finally here! The McCallum Knights 2006 season kicked off with the annual Blue/Gray Scrimmage on Friday, August 11^th. Although it surely didn’t feel like football weather, a large crowd of fans braved the heat to get a glimpse at what the football teams are going to look like this season.

Lucy Read's Reincarnation

On Sunday afternoon, Aug. 13, passersby could see workers preparing the Austin Independent School District campus at Lucy Read on Rich Creek for its debut as a pre-kindergarten magnet school.

The most obvious changes include a new red and blue color scheme, a sprawling playground addition and new chainlink fencing.

Yes, folks, football season is quickly approaching, and the McCallum High Football Booster Club is gearing up for the upcoming year.

The Booster Club had their initial meeting July 26, where Head Coach Pat Honeycutt introduced McCallum’s new Defensive Coordinator, Pete Solana. He has been coaching for 17 years, with his most recent role as Defensive Coordinator at Pflugerville Hendrickson. 

Blue Star Cafeteria

"How cool!" was my wife's reaction when we first walked into Blue Star Cafeteria in  Rosedale Village for dinner on a recent Friday night. The exterior really didn't clue us into the contemporary  interior. It's certainly not the  serve-yourself-pay-the-cashier type of cafeteria that I'm used to - and that's a good thing. I've never found Chicken-Fried Quail or Waldorf Chopped Spinach Salad at a cafeteria. Both, by the way, were very tasty. These are the kinds of out-of-the ordinary dishes you can expect to find at Blue Star.
