Defensively, the Knights were led with strong plays by linebackers Hudson Stancliff and Sam Richter. Defensive end Clete Donovan and defensive tackle Marshall Giddings helped keep the Vikings at bay for the first three periods.
The McCallum Knights opened their district play last Friday night at House Park with a convincing 42 to 14 win over long time foe, the Lanier Vikings.
The Vikings garnered two scores in the fourth quarter when it appeared the game was out of reach and McCallum was giving their reserves some much needed playing time. The Knights defensive play was highlighted when linebacker Sam Richter scooped up a Lanier fumble and rumbled 30 yards to the end zone for the Knights final score.
McCallum showed a well-balanced offensive attack as well. The Knights were led by quarterback Kevin Lusson, who completed 11 of 16 passes for 168 yards and 4 touchdowns. Most of those yards were to receiver Van Franks, who led the Knights in receiving with 112 yards and 3 touchdowns. McCallum’s Jared Houston led the ground game in posting 108 of the 200 yards on 13 carries. The unsung heroes of the night were the offensive linemen who kept the Vikings away from Lusson all night and allowing Houston to gallop through the Vikings defense. Josh Goodlow and Tony Lombeida at the tackle positions anchor the Knights line, with guards Grant Davis and Alvin Brown, and center Colton Collins holding down the middle.
Next week, McCallum battles the Johnston Rams at 7pm Thursday night, at House Park. Come out and help the Knights continue their march for a fourth district championship.
