Take a survey on your energy consumption

Graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin are conducting a research study to explore Austinites' current energy consumption and their preferences for various energy policies and vehicle technologies. Because this information is pertinent to Capital Metro a link has been provided to the survey.

• The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
• The survey will ask questions about you, your travel, and your household's energy use.
• No names or other identifying information will be used in preparing the data for analysis.
• There are no risks involved in participation in this study and no direct benefits.
• You are not obligated to participate in the survey and you can stop at anytime.
• However, your input and opinions are VERY IMPORTANT, since it is critical that all perspectives and types of residents be represented in this survey.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS TO HOST GENERAL MEETING ON PROMOTING INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY

Here is a link to a map with the locations and contacts for this year's Neighborhood Night Out (NNO) gatherings scheduled for Tuesday, October 7th. NNO is being coordinated this year by Laura DiCarlo, Allandale's volunteer Neighborhood Safety Coordinator. The objectives of NNO are:

    * Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
    * Generate support and participation in crime efforts.
    * Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations.
    * Send the message that your neighborhood is a safe place to live.

ANA General Membership Meeting this Thursday

The Allandale Neighborhood Association will be having its General Membership Meeting this Thursday. In addition to the regular meeting agenda, the membership will elect members to the Executive Committee.

We will also have Andrew Donoho speak on solar electricity. Andrew is particularly well suited to discuss this since he is formerly a citizen-commissioner on the City of Austin's Resource Management Commission committee. He is current on technical and regulatory concerns when putting electric panels on your house. 

Please plan on attending. The meeting will be at the Yarborough Library, 2200 Hancock, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Tuesday's Commander's Forum

We found out at the Commander's Forum last night that our new District Reps are Kelly LaHood (south of Hancock so just a tiny bit of Allandale) and A.J. Rodriguez. Kelly was there last night and seemed fabulous - very young, outgoing and energetic. AJ was unable to be there but I'm going to call him soon. I'm hoping he'll be able to attend some if not all of the National Night Out gatherings set for Allandale on October 7th (there are at least 14 or 15 planned).

Out with the Old, In with the New

The Old. A photo of the property formerly known as the Antique Marketplace being torn down at 5350 Burnet Rd. A mixed use development will be taking its place.

The New. Here's a photo of the Walgreens under construction just north of the Antique Marketplace at the corner of Burnet and Koenig where Frisco's was.

Large Voter Turnout expected in Travis County

Based on huge voter turnouts in the presidential primaries, Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir expects that the voter turnout on November 4 will “surpass anything we have seen before.” The 2008 presidential election certainly has been one of the most interesting, historic and closely followed campaigns in modern times. A weak economy, 2 wars, the first serious female presidential candidate, first female vice presidential nominee and the first African American presidential nominee has generated more interest in the outcome than at any time in the last 40 years. Historically only about half of registered voters have bothered to vote in U. S. presidential elections. It has been 40 years since a presidential election attracted even 6 in 10 registered voters, which is lower than almost any other industrialized democracy.

Library Update

The Yarborough and North Village branch libraries are valuable resources for our neighborhood, funded by everyone’s tax dollars. In addition to lending books, movies, and CDs, these branches offer a variety of services to our community—ranging from story times for kids to free wireless internet access to an air-conditioned place to lounge on a hot summer day.

The Yarborough library branch (2200 Hancock Dr., 454-7208) has a few developments of particular note:
•    A winter holiday party on Saturday, December 13, will include music, food, and crafts for kids.
•    The branch encourages artistic expression by exhibiting local artists’ work. Anyone who paints, draws, does photography, or creates other types of art is welcome to contact the branch’s managing librarian, Bonita Snyder-Jones.
•    Many community groups use the branch’s meeting rooms for a variety of purposes. If a group plans to use the meeting facilities, it should be aware that the branch’s scheduling process has changed. As a result, applications for 2009 meeting space should be filled out this November.
