A day in the park

  The Allandale Picnic in the Park was the place to be Sunday afternoon, March 29, 2009 in Austin. We had it all, great music, food, vendors/craft booths, and perfect weather. Thanks to the Allandale Neighborhood Association and all of the volunteers who put it together. Thanks to Roger Beasley for helping to underwrite the event. Thanks to the bands: the McCallum Steel Drum Band, Sarah Pierce, and the Bellville Outfit. It was a fun fun afternoon at Northwest Park. And thanks to Charles Randow for these pictures of Sarah Pierce, the Bellville Outfit and the clowns.

Celebrate Allandale Picnic in the Park Today!

Picnic starts at 2:00. Music, Food, and Fun! McCallum Steel Drum Band, Sarah Pierce, and the Bellvile Outfit will provide the entertainment. In addition Amy's Ice Cream, Phil's Hamburgers, Russell's Bakery, and Jim Jim's will be there to take care of your appetite.The main focus will be the music but we will also have a village of craft booths, an art installation, clowns, and demonstrations in the parking area of electric scooters and solar power. Rosedale Ride this Saturday

For you cyclists out there. This Saturday, March 28, is the 15th annual Rosedale Ride. The ride supports the Rosedale School, AISD's only school for children with multiple disabilities. Click here for more information.

Allandale General Meeting - Thursday, March 26

The Allandale Neighborhood Association general membership meeting will be held at the Yarborough Library on Thursday, March 26, 2009 from 6:30-8:30. Agenda to follow. The Library is located at 2200 Hancock.

Tree planting this Saturday, March 28th!

Official hours are 9 am - 1 PM, at Northwest Park but the work will probably be finished by 11:30 am.

The Austin Parks Foundation is generously providing the irrigation for these trees, to the tune of $8,000.

Please show up, and help spread the word. The more neighbors we can have at the event.. the better.  We need to show the city that our neighborhood supports tree plantings and improvements.

Q&A with mayoral candidate Lee Leffingwell

Lee Leffingwell is running for mayor because as he puts it, "These are tough times and the City needs a steady hand and a strong hand, someone who will stay focused on the fundamentals." Jackie O'Keefe, Andrew Donaho, and Donna Beth McCormick hosted a meet the candidate get-together Saturday afternoon with council member and mayoral candidate Lee Leffingwell. Jackie and Andrew opened up their doors onto their backyard deck that looks out onto Jackie's beautiful garden where the meeting took place. They served BBQ and refreshments. This is the second of the Allandale Reporter mayoral candidate reports. The first was with Brewster McCracken that took place at Jason Mittman and Sheila Reiter's house on Shoal Creek.

Junior League Store Closing

According to an article in the Austin American-Statesman, "Junior League of Austin closing Burnet Road resale store," by Andrea Ball, the store will be closing at the end of May. They don't have enough volunteers to staff it.

NW Recreation Center Seeking Board Members

Greetings neighbors!

The NW Recreation Center is a wonderful resource for us - right smack in of our neighborhood. It serves a regional community, not just Allandale, and offers a full complement of recreational programs for children, teens, and adults. NWRC is getting a facelift - new additions to the building at last!
- so this year is an important one for the Center and the neighborhoods served.

The Advisory Board meets one Thursday a month, helping NWRC Director Lucas Massie and his staff in an advisory capacity -- offering ideas, interface to neighborhoods and City administrative staff, and general support to develop NWRC's mission in our community.

McCallum Hires new coach

According to today's Austin American-Statesman, "McCallum hires Stony Point assistant Raymond," by Rick Cantu, McCallum has hired a replacement for coach Pat Honeycutt who died of a heart attack in January. The new coach, Toddy Raymond, is a McCallum graduate and former assistant football coach at McCallum. Click here to read the article from today's paper.

It's My Park Day March 2009

Kay Newell

Thank you to everyone that provided their empty milk jugs. They were used to move mulch around the trees - just ask Matt, Miss Mary, and Davis about that adventure. Thank you for helping!  The jugs were also perfect paint buckets for the group that was painting the railing at the Shoal Creek entrance to the pedestrian bridge. It is now a pretty green!

I have a couple of photos of the cliff by the pond. Thanks to people hanging off the side of the wall and the people in the lake collecting cut branches, you can now see the wall.  There was a group on the island trimming back the cattails and cutting down ligustrum - hopefully the island can one day be turned into a wonderful bird habitat, the herons already enjoy it.
