Is Burnet Road ready for a wine and tapas bar? Simplicity Wine & Eats opened last week and judging from the activity in the bar Sunday night, I’d say it looks promising. The new restaurant, located at 4801 Burnet Rd, just a few doors down from the Omelettry, serves a variety of tapas and has a menu of over 70 wines. But…what an odd name for a restaurant.
Claire Hees, manager of the restaurant (see photo), says the name conveys the concept behind the restaurant, from the simple pricing of the menu – all of the tapas are $3.95, wine ranges from $5 to $7 a glass – to the simple European-style juice glasses they serve the wine in.
Tapas are simply small plates of hot or cold food served with wine or beer. The menu includes croquetas (Spanish tapas of meat or fish that are breaded and fried and served hot) and a variety of cheese or meat tapas with spreads. They also serve chunk chocolate, a common wine pairing in Europe. Simplicity prides itself in using recyclable materials like cornstarch dinnerware and dishes that are compostable.
Simplicity Wine & Eats is owned by Parind Vora, chef and owner of the upscale downtown Restaurant Jezebel at 9th and Congress. Parind can be found at Simplicity on Sundays cooking Paella, one of the specials for the day. Claire says plans are to have live folk music on Sunday evenings.
Simplicity Wine & Eats is the type of place to go hang out, relax and visit over a glass of wine, and not worry about blowing your month’s dining-out budget. The restaurant is open Monday - Saturday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
