Help make Northwest Pool the Coolest Pool around

As we go into what looks to be an extremely hot summer, some of us are working to provide the City with aerators for Northwest Pool and other City pools.  Proper aeration will help to keep the pool temperature close to the dew point, a pleasant 80 or so degrees, which will be much healthier and more refreshing for users and will save the City money on water and chemicals.  It will probably take 4 aerators to cool Norhtwest Pool, each of which, if we build them ourselves, should cost somewhere around $600 to $800. Without aerators the pool will quickly reach an unhealthy 88-90 or so degrees.  For more information, to donate (or help with fundraising), or to help build the aerators, please contact Keith at 327-2260 or email kbell@austin.rr.com.

Way2 Go everyone for the help!

The Way 2 Go! Clean Sweep, Keep Austin Beautiful event was a great success! Volunteers did a fantastic job of trimming back foliage, picking up trash and removing tagging on the various school routes. One of the photos is a portion of the sidewalk along White Rock with the tree limbs trimmed back and the sidewalk cleared. You can see from the photo of the e-waste truck that it was a success as well. There were a total of 83 volunteers that showed up for the clean-up including two university groups, Tau Beta Pi and the Longhorn Pre-Pharmacy Association. Thanks to everyone for making the Clean Sweep a success!

The Northwest Park Cleanup

Here are some photos from Saturday's park cleanup. In the past two weeks the park has received a lot of attention. Doors and rails were painted, the pond cleaned, bushes cleared out, walls power-washed, mulch spread, and new ground cover spread for the playground. Thanks to the many volunteers who participated and a big THANKS to the City for their great efforts!

 

Northwest Park Cleanup Part Two - SATURDAY!

This is your last chance to be a part of our wonderful Northwest Park sprucing up! You know we have the best park in town and that is why everyone wants to come.

9 am - 11 am - only two hours out of your weekend! And you will get your exercise and will not have to jog or bike..

We will be finishing up projects getting ready for the spring season. So - if this the old white haired lady who does not do park stuff can come and help, you can to! (I was raised rural and all we had was outside. I like inside!) Bring the kids, it is a good time for out-of-doors.

Saturday's Northwest Park Cleanup a Success! More help needed.

We had a great group of volunteers at NW Park this morning and we need a great group next Saturday, April 2, same time, same place, to finish.

AllandaleOnLine provided snacks and water. Little Helping Hands (they are darling) with their parents were there. Two guys got in the kayaks and took debris out of the pond - that is way above my pay grade, but they knew what they were doing and thanks to Curtis for picking them up. We had UT volunteers, other young and able volunteers that were painting, cutting brush, mulching, etc. Malcoln had everyone assigned to a duty.

Linnea is out of commission with a broken leg, so others have stepped up. West Austin News was there doing a story. We need you Saturday - lots of activity at Northwest Park!

Park Blitz Volunteer Day @ Beverly Sheffield Northwest District Park

During the last week of March, City of Austin Parks and Recreation crews will be out for three full days working on a series of clean-up and fix-up projects at Beverly Sheffield/Northwest District Park. 

The Park Blitz will begin and end with community volunteer workdays. Austin Parks & Recreation and the Allandale Neighborhood are looking for volunteers to help with painting picnic tables, trash cans, sign posts and hand rails, spreading mulch, removing cattails from the pond, and litter cleanup on Two Saturdays.

Frisco’s to Water New Trees on Burnet Rd

Volunteers from Allandale, Brentwood and Crestview planted 10 trees along Burnet Rd on March 13.  The trees are arranged to provide shade and buffer from traffic for future sidewalks. Six of the trees were planted at Frisco’s.  Frisco’s staff will water the trees weekly for the next two years until they are fully established.  “I think everyone on our staff loves trees and nature – we’re excited to bring beauty to the grounds of our restaurant,” general manager Deborah Donovan said.  "Frisco’s has been an integral part of the neighborhood fabric for 58 years.  Sidewalk trees that make Burnet Rd feel more like the surrounding communities fits well with our way of thinking," Donovan said. 

Playground Enhancement Projects Scheduled for Northwest District

Three playgrounds in the Northwest District are scheduled to be closed for renovations in the coming weeks. West Austin Park, Beverly Sheffield Northwest District Park and Pease District Park will see some construction activity at the playscape.  The current safety surface of the playscape (pea gravel) will be removed and replaced with Engineered Wood Fiber.  The following are the dates that the playscapes will be closed:

• West Austin Park- Closed on March 28, with work scheduled to begin on March 29.  It is anticipated that the work will be completed by April 11.  
• Beverly Sheffield Northwest District Park- Closed on March 21, with work scheduled to begin immediately.  It is anticipated that the work will be completed by April 1.  
• Pease District Park- Closed on April 4, with work scheduled to begin immediately.  It is anticipated that the work will be completed by April 18.
