Allandale Crime - A look at the numbers for 2010

The number of home burglaries in Allandale was down last year but the number of Burglary of Vehicles was up dramatically. Criminals stealing from cars was the top crime in the neighborhood as it was in 2009. The number of Burglary of Vehicles increased 14% to 191 incidents, an average of 16 a month. Many of the incidents were people stealing from cars in parking lots at establishments along Anderson Ln and Burnet Rd. Nevertheless, there was a significant number of them that occurred within the borders of the neighborhood. driveway repair scam happening in Allandale

Just wanted to pass on info I have received from a resident whose 90 year old parents live in northwest Allandale. A man came to the couple's house and said he wanted to repair their driveway cracks for $200. They said yes, and he proceeded to paint the driveway black and change the charge to $900. A second man driving a red truck (they didn't have any more details) came to their house and tried to get more money for driveway repairs.

I encouraged the son to report these men to the police and Better Business Bureau, but his parents did not get their names.

Please alert elderly neighbors or others not on the listserve to be aware this has happened in our area, and please report anyone who tries to do this to you.

Neighborhood Watch training this evening 10/26

Just wanted to remind everyone I'm doing Neighborhood Watch training at my house Tuesday, 10/26.
7:15pm - block captains
8:15pm - patrols

Job descriptions:

block captain - keeps the contact list for the street
- informs people of burglaries, etc.
- organizes the National Night out Party if he or she
chooses to have one

patrol - signs up on a Google calendar, puts magnetic signs on his/her car
or a sign on his/her bike, and patrols a sector of Allandale for
1 hour/week recording suspicious activity and calling 911 or 311
if needed

National Night Out on Daugherty

Here are 3 photos from the National Night Out event at 7009 Daugherty, covering the Green Acres subdivision (Ellise, Albata, and Daugherty from Greenlawn to Pegram).  27 people attended.  Thanks to Mike and Allison Laymon for hosting and to Trudy Evans for her help too!

 

National Night Out on 49 1/2 Street

Hosted by Kata Carbone and David Orshalick, West 49 1/2 Street had a fine turnout, where the pumpkin cupcakes were upstaged by a visit from Austin's station #12 firefighters. Neighbors were treated to an inside view of an amazing firetruck andlearned quite a lot about safety. Candles, space heaters, and smoking materials are prime culprits in starting fires. Neighbors are urged to ensure that smoke detectors are in goodworking order: we should all get into the habit of changing the batteries in the Spring and Fall when we change the clocks. Smoke detectors are especially vital at night because when we're asleep, our sense of smell is dormant as well.

National Night Out in Allandale

Last night, Tuesday October 5, 2010 from 6-9pm, Allandale joined neighborhoods throughout Austin and the nation for the 27th Annual National Night Out (NNO). Actually, most communities did their NNO in August, but due to the heat in Austin, APD moved ours to the first Tuesday in October every year.  

The event gave residents an opportunity to meet neighbors and commit to help law enforcement reduce crime. Block captains organized 29 parties in Allandale and were visited by fire fighters with their trucks, EMS, and police officers. The photo on the left is from the block party hosted by Michael and Elizabeth Bomba on Bullard Dr. The photo on the right is from the NNO party on West Greenlawn. National Night Out 2010

This year's National Night Out is Tuesday, October 5, 2010. National Night Out is when neighborhoods throughout Austin and thousands of communities nationwide get together to:

   1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
   2. Generate support and participation in crime efforts.
   3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations.
   4. Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

On October 5, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., residents in neighborhoods throughout Austin and across the nation are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters and EMS paramedics. Events such as cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks will all occur simultaneously throughout the city and nationwide. Click here for more information about National Night Out. 

Allandale has always had a strong turnout for this event. You may have already been contacted by your block captain about a NNO party in your area. It's a great way to get to know neighbors better and spread the word about Neighborhood Watch. A message from Laura DiCarlo, Allandale's Neighborhood Watch Coordinator:

The Whiteway burglary, the one at Sammy's House, and other recent burglaries such as the one on White Horse Trail, point to the fact that we may need to step up our Neighborhood Watch efforts.  

Please come to our ANA General Meeting this Thursday at 6:30pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church (corner of 2222 and MOPAC)to hear from and ask questions of our APD District Reps, Officers Rolando Gutierrez and Josh Metteauer. 

In addition, I will be doing a training for block captains Tuesday, October 26th at 7:15pm and patrols at 8:15pm at 6307 Wilbur Dr.

Please RSVP off list if you would like to come to the training for either or both, or if you just want to learn more.  I can also do trainings other times and days to accommodate people's schedules.

Please follow these guidelines as well to step up safety efforts:
