As the Allandale Neighborhood Association considers whether to join the City of Austin's neighborhood planning process, a couple of us on the ANA Executive Committee sent out inquiries to other neighborhoods who have gone through the process for their input. I sent out the following query to the Austin Neighborhood Council's listserv:
Subject: [ANCtalk] neighborhood planning process - what would you do different
"Would be interested to hear from neighborhoods who have gone through the neighborhood planning process. I would like to know what was gained, whether you're glad you did it, and what you would do different if you went through it again. Has it made a difference?

Allandale"
Separately, Kay Newell sent the following to other neighborhoods and those knowledgeable about the process:
"Hi Laura,
Allandale is considering entering the neighborhood planning process. I was wondering if you would share some of the pros and cons of the process, things you would have done differently if you knew at the beginning of the process what you knew by the end of the process, etc. Anything you feel would be of help during our decision making process.
Thanks - Kay"
Here's the compilation of the 11 responses we received. I think you will find them informative. And here are some additional quotes from people involved in the process compiled as a part of UT's 2006 neighborhood planning project. It's entitled "Neighborhood Planning: Personal Stories."
